About Nina
Nina McIntosh published the
ground-breaking book The Educated Heart
in 1999. It was the first text on ethics and
boundaries for the profession and has
become a classic in the field.
The 3rd Edition was published by LWW in
2010.
Nina McIntosh was graduated from Tulane University School of Social Work in 1970 and was a
psychiatric social worker for several years. Her interest turned to the somatic practices and in
1978, she became a graduate of what is now the Boulder College of Massage Therapy.
In 1981, she was certified by the Rolf Institute as a Certified Rolfer. She practiced as a Rolfer for
twenty-five years and also studied Rosen Method bodywork. Nina McIntosh taught workshops
and seminars at schools of massage therapy across the country for several years. She was the
keynote speaker for the AMTA Council of Schools Conference in Clearwater, Florida, in
January of 2003.In 2010, she was honored at The World Massage Festival with the Aunty
Margaret Machado Humanitarian Award.
For a decade, Nina also wrote The Heart of Bodywork, a regular popular column on ethics and
professionalism for Massage & Bodywork magazine.
Nina passed away on July 18, 2010. Her work is being continued by Laura Allen, Approved
Provider under the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork.
About Laura Allen
Nina McIntosh was my dear friend and mentor, and prior to her passing, she arranged with
our publisher, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, for me to author the future editions of her book.
I am also the author of Plain & Simple Guide to Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork
Examinations (2nd ed, LWW, 2010), One Year to a Successful Massage Therapy Practice
(LWW, 2008), and A Massage Therapist's Guide to Business (LWW, 2011).
I have been practicing massage therapy since 1998. II am the owner of THERA-SSAGE, a
multi-disciplinary clinic located in Rutherfordton, NC. I consult with massage schools and
practitioners who wish to become Approved Providers, or who just need to grow their
business.
I teach and host other educators at my facility in Rutherfordton NC. You can see our
complete course listing here. I offer classes in Advanced Massage Techniques annually in
Ireland at the Obus School of Healing Therapies near Dublin.
I am a member of AMTA, ABMP, and a founding member of the Alliance for Massage
Therapy Education and am an Approved Provider under the NCBTMB (and also in the state
of Florida).
I am also a blogger, writing mainly about regulation, legislation, and what's going on with the
